Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Remarks

The English opening batter Zak Crawley suggested he was not familiar with statements from skipper Stokes about the dressing room as no place for "weak men".

Stokes delivered this message in multiple interviews in the wake of his team's loss in the second match of the Ashes versus Australia earlier this month.

Ahead of the third Test, where England now face a series loss at the earliest opportunity, Stokes stated he had let his message to "circulate freely" among the squad.

"I've done all the talking in recent days that I needed to have done," remarked Stokes.

But, after Crawley scored a knock of 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he commented: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. Our approach is to take anything stated in the media with some skepticism," he added.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

Stokes issued his "weak men" observation subsequent to England suffered a loss in the second Test to fall 2-0 down.

The England squad subsequently went on a break to Noosa between the second and the upcoming matches.

Before the Adelaide contest, he said his players had held "raw" conversations and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their effort to remain in contention in the series.

Yet, Crawley asserted the guidance from the captain and head coach McCullum had remained consistent with their previous three years in charge.

"It's been extremely upbeat, the same as always," said the opener. "It's on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with great liberty. It felt like we could do something special entering this Test."

Australia Close of Rapid Series Victory

Crawley's wicket on day four came during a crucial three-wicket burst by Australia off-spinner Nathan Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in a short spell – he also bowled Brook and Ben Stokes – meant the chasing side six down for 207 in pursuit of a daunting total of 435.

Consequently, Australia require just four more wickets on Sunday's final day to secure an insurmountable 3-0 lead after three matches played.

Defeat would prolong England's drought in Australia to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth successive away Ashes loss.

This series is set to be decided in only 11 days of cricket – with England losing the initial matches in two and four days respectively.

Not since 1921, when Australia completed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the urn been decided so quickly. The hosts have also triumphed in 11 days on two other instances in the modern era.

"It's disappointing," said Crawley. "We came here to regain the Ashes and we're staring down the barrel at this point."

"There remains plenty to play for and we'll certainly approach it like that," he continued.

"It's been difficult. Australia is a formidable side. It was inevitably tough coming here to face them. They entered as the favourites and they've proven why."

Pope's Place Under Scrutiny

Although the opener's innings in Adelaide probably answers questions about his short-term future in the side, Ollie Pope appears under threat for his position in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

Pope was out for 17 runs in England's second innings on Saturday, adding to his poor record against Australia.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, the Surrey man has never made a half-century and averages just 17.62.

Only one other England player in over a century – Dennis Amiss – has featured an equal number of innings in the top six in the Ashes and returned a poorer average.

However, the opener insisted any notion Pope is being scrutinised comes from "the media" – meaning the press – "and not within the team."

"We all know of his considerable talent," said he. "Ollie has enjoyed a productive year to be frank."

"He has produced several excellent innings. This is noise from the outside. There is no chat like that regarding Pope in the camp," Crawley finished.
