In a significant development ahead of next year's general election, a pair of high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition emerges in the aftermath of large-scale and deadly young people's demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the ouster of the incumbent government.
A Commitment to Address Youth Concerns
Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly pledged to prioritize the grievances raised by the younger generation. This commitment comes after the violent anti-corruption protests that occurred in September, which resulted in considerable casualties.
"Consensus must not be what a leader wants, it must be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane after the deal was finalized.
The late summer revolt was sparked by public anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a spark for deeper resentment stemming from years of slow growth and longstanding accusations of systemic graft in politics.
Terms of the Fresh Political Partnership
According to the official agreement, the positions for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread discontent with the country's older political leadership. He has in the past served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key player in Nepal's current political shift. He was instrumental in setting up the interim government that came to power after the previous administration was dissolved.
Broader Political Discussions Taking Place
In a related development, the current interim prime minister recently held meetings with a number of major political figures. These talks included former prime ministers and the presidents of rival mainstream parties, marking the initial such gathering since the time of the protests.
Following these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that conducting a credible election is a shared responsibility. The message affirmed the government's dedication to ensuring a secure and fear-free environment for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
