Colombian President Warns 'I Will Return to Arms Again' if American Forces Launches an Attack.

President Trump along with President Gustavo Petro have escalated the tone of their exchange, heightening strains bilaterally after US forces targeted Venezuela to remove Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro from his position.

"He operates cocaine mills and production sites and is not going to be doing it very long," Trump remarked.

Growing Tensions coupled with Allegations

Addressing the press over the weekend, Trump suggested similar armed intervention towards the South American nation, asserting the nation is also "very ill" and “run by an unwell individual who likes making cocaine and distributing it to the US."

Although Colombia remains the world’s largest source of the narcotic, authorities have found no indication linking President Gustavo Petro, who was elected in 2022, is directly tied to the illicit industry.

A Deteriorating Partnership

This nation has long been a close partner of the US in the campaign combating drug cartels and received bipartisan support in the US capital, but relations have worsened significantly following Trump assumed the presidency.

Colombia’s drug trade is largely controlled by guerrilla factions like the Clan del Golfo, the National Liberation Army (ELN) and renegade units of the former Farc guerrillas, a large contingent of whom disbanded after a 2016 peace deal.

Petro's Firm Rebuttal

Upon being questioned if armed intervention comparable to Venezuela was on the cards for Colombia, Trump replied: "I like the sound of that from my perspective."

Petro, an ex-guerrilla fighter who demobilised decades ago, rejected the accusations. "I am no an illegitimate leader nor am I involved in narcotics," he declared.

"He comments uninformed. Cease defaming me," he posted online.

"If US bombs target rural communities, they will transform into numerous insurgents across the countryside. And if they detain the president, which a significant portion of Colombians holds in high esteem, they will unleash the fierce spirit of the people," Petro warned.

From Fighter to Statesman

He passed some years as a young man belonging with the radical M-19 armed organization although reports indicate he did not participated in combat. After demobilizing, he was involved in writing the constitutional rewrite over three decades ago and later became a respected lawmaker. He was mayor of the Colombian capital prior to his election the nation's highest office.

"I pledged not to touch a gun ... but for the homeland I would take up arms again," he vowed.

Reinforced Protection and Cross-Political Condemnation

The Colombian defence minister announced that the national leader's protection team had been reinforced.

Many among Colombia’s conservative opposition have sided with the US president, yet figures from across the ideological divide have rejected the threats of American military action against their nation.

Diplomatic and Economic Pressure

Washington cancelled the president's entry visa subsequent to he called on US troops to ignore orders that violate law. In October, it placed asset freezes on Petro, his wife and several key allies.

At the same time as the US increased its forces in the Caribbean and striking alleged narcotics traffickers to pressure Venezuela’s Maduro, the US have also conducted operations on maritime targets in the eastern Pacific region near Colombia.
